Momentum is back

The market tipped its hand. The momentum cycle is back in play. There are breakouts a galore. Those who were prepared for this could capitalise on this move. Those married to hypothesis and following the popular blogs were left on the sideline.

One of the most important quality to develop as trader is to be flexible. Remember the market is the leading indicator. All the macro analysis and big picture stuff is of no use if it can not predict or anticipate the market direction. You must be always prepared for such rallies. If you hesitate or start researching now, the best opportunities may not wait for you.

As I had indicated earlier, now onwards there will be more data focus. You can find your own opportunities in this data. This set of ideas should give you enough to work on daily basis. Both long term and short term traders should find profitable ideas in these lists. These lists should above all allow you to anticipate few moves. They also ensure you never miss a major opportunity. The format and actual lists will evolve based on feedback.

You can also track the intra day trades being highlighted in the comments section. Today morning I highlighted number of trades starting as early as 9:50 onwards. Most of them made 5to 10% moves post the comments. So if you are looking for profitable ideas keep checking the comments in morning. Walter and F also suggested number of good trades today. F has also been right on money about his prediction of impending rally in Nasdaq, which he made yesterday and day before, when things looked gloomy.

Nice call on RBAK. I missed that big move.

I am experimenting with a new technique of hypothesizing possible scenarios and outcomes for the next day's trading. For example, I see that the Nov CPI is the big news coming out tommorrow at 830. Looking at my indicators, assuming the worst case scenario that this report suggests inflation and traders respond (in additon to the options expiration jitters), I see QQQQ falling back to support and probably bouncing. If CPI is within expected bounds, I see some expected profit taking and minor selling (again, expirations jitters) but the market should chop with a bullish bias. These are just ideas that I have concluded based on my indicators of market breadth and volume distribution.

I know you have a strong statistics and data mining background. What do you think about this approach?

The Indexes on most time frame show strong mean reversion tendencies and more so on shorter time frames. So most of the time any anti trend entry has higher probability of working. That in addition to the fact that there is upward drift, leads to many ways of trading.
The most famous system being the one used by Niederhoffer. He has been largely successful with that approach with occassional blow ups along the way.
Individual stocks behave very differently from Indexes.
