Zacks.com - Newsroom - Earnings Trends

Posted on 4/27/2006
Zacks.com - Newsroom - Earnings Trends:
"Earnings reports continue to flood in; through the close of Tuesday, 45.2% of the S&P 500 (226 companies) have reported. The median year-over-year growth rate of the firms that have reported so far is 13.0%, making it very likely that this will be yet another quarter of double-digit growth. So far, the reports have been amazingly positive, far more so than in the fourth quarter. Positive surprises are out numbering disappointments by a staggering 5.9:1, at this point in the fourth quarter reporting cycle, positives were beating negatives by “only” 3.2:1. The magnitude of the positive surprises is also impressive, the median firm has reported earnings that are 3.70% (and two cents) higher than expected.

The good news is extremely widespread, every sector has more positive surprises than disappointments, and with the exception of Consumer Staples and Utilities, the margin is at least 3:1. "

Even though the market is stuck and not going anywhere, the earning picture so far is above expectation.

Travelzoo TZOO

TZOO has sky rocketed post earnings. There are many other stocks like this. Earnings act as catalyst and there are numerous studies to show effect of earnings and earnings surprises on future price moment. It is easy to build a system based on earning as catalyst.
The earning season always brings out new surprises and as a consequence new stock ideas. Stocks react to earnings immediately in cases where there is a surprise or stock is not followed by most of the analyst. This can set up rallies which last from 6 weeks to sometime years. On the short side also you will find stocks reacting up to 25% post earning.
These trends are not only short lived but have legs. Many of these stocks go on to make triple digits in just few quarters. The breakouts following earnings are some of the most powerful breakouts you will ever see. Some of these stocks just take off like rockets. The overall market direction does not matter.
Obviously with over 7000 stocks reporting earnings, you need some systematic way to reduce the universe to track earnings on, you need your own database to track it and covert it in to proper system using risks management and stops.

Update : You can find more about this here Tops or bottoms- it's a stock pickers market

NTRI is up 10 points in after hours after announcing earnings. This stock is up over 655% this year. Stocks react to dramatic increase in earnings and sales. The key is to decide a threshold to track for this kind of data. I track the top 200 earnings and sales performer every quarter and find they have legs.

401(k) Fees Get Little Scrutiny - Los Angeles Times

Posted on 4/22/2006
Must read for anyone with 401(k). You will be shocked at how much you end up losing over the life of your 401(k) investment.

401(k) Fees Get Little Scrutiny - Los Angeles Times: "
As many employers scrap their traditional pensions and doubts grow about the future of Social Security, Americans' hopes for a secure retirement depend more than ever on their 401(k)s. About 44 million workers have more than $2 trillion invested in these accounts.

Yet unknown to many of them, obscure fees and deductions are quietly eroding the value of their nest eggs. In many cases, employers could bargain for lower charges, but don't.

Mutual fund management fees are the biggest expense. But they are prominently disclosed, have attracted wide publicity and have been declining as fund providers compete for customers.

Administrative fees are another matter. They usually don't show up on quarterly or annual statements. Brochures touting the benefits of 401(k) investing rarely mention them. Employees have to work hard to find out how much they're paying — for instance, by scouring their plan's website for a record of all activity in their accounts."

Cash in loo

From nothing to do with trading department.
A German pensioner flushed 30,000 old Deutschmarks worth £10,400 down his toilet, mistakenly thinking that they were worthless, police said.

Luckily for him the notes caused a blockage and a plumber managed to retrieve the sodden currency.

The 64-year-old pensioner had not realised that the notes could be exchanged at a bank for 15,000 euros.

The man later handed the money over at a bank in the northern city of Kiel, receiving a credit note, police said.

Euros replaced Deutschmarks in Germany in 2002. But the old currency can still be exchanged for euros at German banks free of commission.

The pensioner still had another 30,000 Deutschmarks at his apartment, as well as about 14,000 euros, police said.

Small edge or large edge

As a speculator, there is always a choice between finding small edges and finding large edges. That also determines the frequency of your trades. Buffet is an example of someone with large edge. In his lifetime he has done very few trades. Compare that to the day traders or statistical based traders who do several in a day or week.
The mental make up required to make the transition is very difficult and that is why certain traders would rather continue to trade a mediocre small edge strategy than make a leap to using larger edge strategies.
The Market Wizards book has examples of both kinds of traders. There are examples of traders who make triple digit returns with few trades in that book and at the same time examples of the opposite.
Most of the small edge finding methodologies are similar to what you will find on the Tradefeed blog. There are number of other blogs devoted to high frequency techniques, personally I prefer systems or strategies with larger edge. All my effort is devoted to finding and developing larger edge involving lower frequency of trading.

Stocks with extreme volume

As you can see, bulk of the selling today was in two hot sectors, gold and silver. When extreme volume shows up a lot of players from one sector, most of the time a reversal is close by. The gold sector for couple of weeks had many stocks with extreme volume, signaling a climax move was coming to an end.

Earnings season early trends

Posted on 4/19/2006
Zacks has an early read on earnings trends, which so far seem to be significantly above expectations.
The first quarter earnings season is underway, and is off to a spectacular start. While it is still very early, with just 371. of the reports in, the numbers so far have been very strong. Positive surprises are leading disappointments by a staggering 13:1 ratio. I think it is extremely unlikely that such a ratio will hold as the reporting season wears on. In the fourth quarter, the ratio of positive surprises to disappointments was just a hair under 3:1.
The emerging star with regards to estimate revisions is the Materials sector. The strength there is mostly among the metals companies, largely in response to record, or at least decades old highs, in metals prices. However the strength is not limited to the metals alone, and chemical and paper companies are also showing significant strength. For the first quarter, the sector is now expected to post median growth of 9.1%, while a month ago it was only expected to show 4.6% growth.

Momentum Stock Trading

Most well known and successful systems use momentum. The most famous IBD CANSLIM system is an excellent example of using price and earning momentum to trade.
There are many variations of the momentum system , Darvas was also using momentum plus fundamentals.
At a very simple level if you just concentrate on the top 1 or 2% of the momentum stocks by yearly growth rate , you will find the double baggers and triple baggers in them.
Look at ERS, PWEI, TIE, DXPE, NTRI, BTUI, HOM, IIIN, BDCO, ANAD, ENG, GRZ, EVST, MYOG, HANS, ZOLT, RACK and some 170 stocks like these and you will likely get next momentum stock from them. Or you can look at the top 100 stocks list on this blog.
Also if you study regularly the stocks which show 50% plus move in a month, you will get an insight in to at what momentum level do these kind of move happen, what events trigger such moves, what are the other characteristics of such movers. If you study them over a sufficiently long period of time you will get many useful ideas to build a momentum trading system.
All momentum systems are basically same with slight variation in entry techniques, some enter on breakouts, some on weakness or retracements and some put buy stops at higher price .
The problem is do you have the risk profile to trade such stocks as they have high volatility, plus buying something which is up 100% or 200% already requires some nerves.

Public domain profitable system

There is a very interesting journal on elitetrader by Spydertrader, which documents how he has developed and trades a very simple trading system. The essence of the system is equity selection using IBD criteria. The entries have been perfected to enter at low risk point. The exits have profit targets. It is a high frequency trading system with some degree of judgment and discretion but overall a very good system.
The journal also is an excellent example of how by focusing on simple idea and concept you can convert it in to profitable system. Lot of time traders spend too much time flirting from one thing to another rather than focusing on few things.

Speculators and databases

Posted on 4/13/2006
"let me warn you that the fruits of your success will be in direct ratio to the honesty and sincerity of your own effort in keeping your own records, doing your own thinking, and reaching your own conclusions." - Jesse Livermore How to trade in stocks

One of the ways to improve your trading is to maintain your own databases. With proliferation of databases on the net, the temptation is always to rely on such product as against building your own bases, but if you do it yourself, you will build a deeper understanding of what is behind such databases.
Many times people use databases like the IBD database of EPS ranking and RS, or Zacks ranking, or Value Line. Instead of relying on them building it yourself will give you a much better insight and different ideas. Most people even have no idea as to what is used to calculate some of these things but rely on them to take trading decision. If you for example figure out how IBD calculates its EPS ranking or RS ranking, you will find much better insights in to how to use them.
Most database owners have created the myth around the data which they provide by claiming it is generated using proprietary criteria, but instead of believing in it blindly if you build it yourself you will have several ways to interpret it.
I maintain several databases and by analyzing them over years have unique insights in to using them to build trading systems.

Google Calendar

Google continues to furiously add new futures, the latest is calendar. Henry Blodget has this to say about Google moves and a hint about where Google share price is headed.

Next Up for Google's Portal: New Front Page?

Despite the addition of Google Calendar (thanks to John Battelle) Finance, Real Estate, et al, Google will no doubt still insist that it is not a portal, and will go on insisting so until it finally relents and adds some more links to its front page. When it finally does add such links, however--and, perhaps, a few advertisements to go with them--it will be helping not only shareholders but users.

For those seeking general categories--Real Estate, Finance, etc.--clicking links is easier than typing in a search window. Yes, they clutter up the page, but for the added convenience, who cares. And as previously estimated, even with only an ad or two, the front page could likely bring in an additional $1-$2 million of super-high-margin revenue per day. For those interested in the company's bottom line, that's at least $125-$250 million of additional free cash flow per year ($0.50-$1.00 per share).

S&P earnings trend

Trouble in market/ sector is always reflected in earnings trends. Keep an eye on upcoming earnings.
The week of Apr. 10 is when the earnings-reporting season for the first quarter begins in earnest. As seen in the table below, which compares Standard & Poor's equity analysts' estimates on December 31, 2005, with those as of April 4, 2006, S&P believes companies in the S&P 500 will have increased operating results by 11%, driven by above-market gains for the Energy, Health Care, and Industrial sectors.
Below-market gains are expected to come from Financials, Information Technology, Telecom Services, and Utilities, along with year-over-year declines in earnings likely to be recorded by the Consumer Staples and Materials sectors.

Nothing to do with the market Department

There is an interesting behind the scene story about capture of the Godfather. More interesting facts at the end of the story.

How Godfather was betrayed by his need for clean pants
From Richard Owen in Rome

HE eluded capture for 43 years. But in the end he was betrayed by the need for clean underwear.

Bernardo Provenzano, the Mafia “boss of bosses” who was arrested this week, was traced to his Sicilian hideaway by police who tracked a delivery of laundry.

Provenzano, who had not been seen since going into hiding in 1963, asked his wife to send him “a pack of washed and ironed clothes” — underpants, shirts, and socks.

Police intercepted a telephone conversation between mafiosi indicating that Provenzano’s wife, Saveria Benedetta Palazzolo, who runs a laundry in Corleone, was about to return her husband’s clean clothes. The pack of laundry was handed to one of a team of trusted messengers who for years had taken notes and packages to and from “the Godfather”. This time, however, they were watched by police as well as by television surveillance cameras.

The watchers saw the door of the farmhouse open a tiny crack and a hand emerge to receive the package. A signal was given to storm the house. Provenzano, taken by surprise, turned out to be an elderly, pink-cheeked man with thick-lensed

UNDERLYING FIGURES
# Bill Clinton was asked by a 17-year- old girl in 1994 whether he wore boxers or briefs. He replied “usually briefs”

# Under the headline “Tyrant’s in his pants” Saddam Hussein was pictured by The Sun in 2005 wearing Y-fronts

# Superman prefers red pants, but likes to wear them over lycra trousers

# David Beckham changes his underwear a number of times daily and never wears any pants twice

# When Marlon Brando was fitted in tight jeans for A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) he insisted on wearing no underwear

Earning trends

The Zacks earning trend commentary is out and their are some good pointers to where the action is likely to be for couple of quarters.
The emerging star with regards to estimate revisions is the Materials sector. The strength there is mostly among the metals companies, largely in response to record, or at least decades old highs, in metals prices. However the strength is not limited to the metals alone, as chemical and paper companies are also showing significant strength. For the first quarter, the sector is now expected to post median growth of 9.1%, while a month ago it was only expected to show 4.6% growth.

Estimates have turned up for the Financial Services sector, with the strength concentrated in the brokers and investment banks.

The estimate revision weakness we have been seeing over the last few weeks for the Energy sector for 2006 is starting to show signs of spreading to 2007, although on balance things are still positive for next year. However, oil prices have rebounded sharply over the last week and it will be interesting to see if things turn positive again as a result. Much of the weakness appears to be tied to lower natural gas prices and higher oilfield costs (i.e. higher day rates for drilling rigs).

The Consumer sectors are starting to show some signs of strength in estimate revision, moving back towards a more neutral position after having faced relentless cuts for many months. The Utilities sector has turned dramatically lower, although the big drop in the mean estimate appears to be mostly due to the weakness at DYN. However, the cuts seem broad based, and may be tied to the recent rise in long term interest rates. The Health Care remains sickly in terms of estimate revisions for both years. Looking at the S&P as a whole, on balance things are positive for both 2006 and 2007, although revisions for 2007 continue to be stronger than for 2006.

Pay close attention to the estimate revisions, since they are a much better predictor of stock market performance than growth rates are. Overweight sectors with rising estimates and underweight those will falling estimates.

Sell offs , resilience, and sector rotation

Intense selling like that of few weeks changes market dynamics in many ways. Some sectors get sold off and new sectors or stocks emerge to take on new leadership role. Also it separates men from boys. Stocks which are resilient to selling bounce back with force once selling pressure abates.
What happens during such sell off phase is pulling down of bids and as the sell off wears off there is thickening of the market at new level and the stocks in trend resume their journey.

Gerard Baker from across the pond

Here is a good analysis of what might be happening in American economy.
But fourth, and most important, the US economy may be in more robust shape than people had feared. Until recently, forward short-term interest rates were pointing to a significant slowdown in the US economy late this year, driven by a weakening housing market. But that looks less likely now. Markets are still expecting a softening, but its timing and severity are both now in considerable doubt.

And that may be the largest truth in the events of the last week. The reversion of the US interest rate curve to a more normal shape — upward sloping at a gentle gradient — far from presaging a disaster, may simply represent market recognition that the outlook is actually rather good for the American economy. When you’re growing, ceilings might just have to be broken.

Tops or bottoms- it's a stock pickers market

Most of the weekend commentary is about doom and gloom. The bearish commentators are out in force talking about this is "the top". Does anyone knows for sure? In a up move there are several tops along the way.
What I am focused on is stock picking. In any market you will find stocks not correlated to overall market. They have their own momentum.
Also the most important season for stock picking is ahead of us- the earnings season.
Here are some stocks which reacted favorably in last earning season and rallied 25% or more since announcing earnings.
NEU, IVAC, RACK, ATHR, DXPE, NOIZ, PWEI, CLZR, TRID, NICH, SWSI, CHAP, BGC, AMKR, LCRD, TMI, IIG, CHIC, ICON, RTI, KNXA, GLG, HANS, TLAB, CMG
These trends are not only short lived but have legs. Many of these stocks go on to make triple digits in just few quarters.
Here is a list of stocks from earnings track pool from three quarters ago with triple digit growth in three quarters.
MEK, OYOG, TIE, HOM, ARTG, NTRI, HANS, IVAC, ERS, CECE,HOLX, GROW, ICTG, ATI, ARD, MERX, RAIL, GMXR, KNXA, NVDA, JOYG, GFX, ISRG, BITS, ARS, ZUMZ, TMTA, STMP, NDAQ, NETL, KNOT
The breakouts following earnings are some of the most powerful breakouts you will ever see. Some of these stocks just take off like rockets. The overall market direction does not matter. You can see for yourself what was the market doing during those earning seasons.
Obviously with over 7000 stocks reporting earnings, you need some systematic way to reduce the universe to track earnings on, you need your own database to track it and covert it in to proper system using risks management and stops. More about it later.
In the meanwhile don't fret over the bearish or bullish top or bottom callers too much. If you are keen on tops and bottom picking head here

How to deal with sudden mineral wealth

Posted on 4/09/2006
If you are sitting on oil or mineral wealth, here is a sound advise on what to do.
In five years, the Barnett Shale natural gas boom has turned mineral leasing and royalties into a multibillion-dollar business affecting thousands in North Texas. Residents have had landmen knock on their doors asking about mineral rights as they seek leases for the drilling companies they represent.

Investors on Wall Street are thinking it's getting too easy for you to find a new job

Most business sections make dull reading and do poor job of explaining the economic news, but I have always found The Mercury News business section future-60-Second Biz Break has some of the best headlines. Look at some of these recent ones:
  • Your brighter job prospects upset investors on Wall Street
  • Mortgage rates rise, but so do your Apple shares
  • It's a Windows world, but now your new Mac can live in it
Investors on Wall Street are thinking it's getting too easy for you to find a new job. Worried about the impact of a tightening labor market on the economy, they sold off stocks today, sending the Dow Jones industrial average down 96.46, or 0.9 percent, to 11,120.04, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite index down 22.15, or 0.94 percent, to 2,339.02.

Wall Street's worries were prompted by the Labor Department's monthly report today that showed the nation's employers added 211,000 payroll jobs in March, better than the 190,000 economists had expected. The unemployment rate, meanwhile, dropped to 4.7 percent, its lowest point in 4 1/2 years.

Of course, stock investors are pleased enough that people are working, spending money and contributing to corporate profits. But it seems that some of you are asking for -- and even getting -- raises, pushing average hourly earnings up 0.2 percent and sparking inflation fears.

That has traders worried that the Federal Reserve might keep raising its key interest rate, maybe as high as 5 1/4 percent, which would result in higher borrowing costs for corporations and consumers.

The white knight of the global economy

Posted on 4/08/2006
No two economic cycles are exactly same. Different factors come in to play making long term predictions based on past data more of an art than science. The length and strength of this economic cycle has surprised many. The Morgan Stanley analysis page has some analysis of factors behind this long cycle.
When economies face inflationary pressure, their central banks do not have to raise interest rates by as much as before, because the global financial system does half the job by pushing up their currencies, which essentially transforms inflationary pressure into current account deficit. The global financial system is maximizing global growth by spreading inflationary pressure across the world.

Globalization of production has decreased inflationary pressure, and globalization of finance has made current account deficits easy to finance. The combination is behind the longevity of the current cycle.

The big picture is for big birds

There will be a lot of talk today about big picture as the job number is released. The problem with big picture is data gets released everyday and as Wall Street's appetite for data keeps increasing more data gets released. To make meaning out of it and trade is one way to trade, if you have a big bankroll, or your are an elephant doing asset allocation kind of trend.
For an individual speculator it is much better to spend time sweating over a profitable trading system, or systems and let the risk management and stops take you out if big picture changes.
I keep an eye on big picture, but that is as I have said more to kill time and keep the brain occupied.

Wizetrade

There is some excellent feedback on Wizetrade on Elitetrader!!
I just started trading Wizetrade this week. I quit my job, my wife quit her job, my sister in law quit her job, my kids don't have to sell pencils on the corner anymore, I just bought a villa in Gstaad (the skiing is fabulous), Warren Buffet and Steve Cohen have been calling for advice but I don't take their calls, my penis has grown two inches, all the hair on my back fell out, I don't need glasses anymore and I just hired Greenspan to speak at my family's Sunday dinner. It was $150K but well worth it. Thanks Wizetrade.

How I use the stock with extreme volume signal

A reader has asked how to use these lists. It all depends on your trading horizon and risk appetite. Over next few weeks I will talk about how I use some of this and why.
One of my favorite signal is the extreme volume signal, because I have found significant success with it over the years. It also gives very few candidates to work with.
I primarily use it for long side only but it also can be used for short side. Where the signal appears is also a good indicator. Some of the actual trades will illustrate this.
ABB First signal 11/04/05 at the price of 7.97. Now this was followed by second signal within a month on 12/02/05 giving another opportunity to double up. Since the first signal stock is up 50%.
TIE If you look at TIE over its run so far, you will see this signal many times. Also it illustrates how sellers get washed out or short sellers get trapped. In TIE case the signal on short side was followed by more strength. Same is the case with HANS.
GOOG GOOG had its extreme volume day on 01/20/06 which precipitated its slide.
If you look at today's list , there is one interesting candidate- TRAD. Now it had this same signal a month ago. It went down from 16 to around 13, and yesterday again it showed up so I will be watching it carefully. Appears like some major short position was reversed.
This signal also is very useful on the rare occasion when it appears on large cap stocks. You can see it for yourself on WMT, XOM and GM in recent time.
