Fast moving market...

  • Up 20% in 13 sessions and down 5% in 2 sessions. That is the kind of fast market we are in.
  • A pullback after a big move was logical move, but the nature of this pullback does not inspire much confidence.
  • It was sinking like a stone for last two days with not a single counter trend intra day move.
  • It is end of quarter and futures are indicating a up open. So we will see how the session goes.
  • If this rally has legs there should be soon announcement of new IPO's. If that does not happen in next week or two the rally is suspect.

Economy Down, Vasectomy Up

Signs of the time.....

March 26, 2009 -- In these tough economic times, more men are making a tough decision: vasectomy.

Urologists across the country are reporting that nearly twice as many men have been seeking permanent sterilization via vasectomy since the economic crisis began.

Timid Tim might be on way out

Henry Blodget is predicting Tim Geithner will be out soon. I agree. He has been a complete disaster.

Obama's Treasury Secretary is in trouble. Yesterday, we heard the first public discussion of a resignation. That theme will likely gain steam over the next few days.

A recap of what everyone is frustrated about:

Geithner approved the AIG bonuses
Geithner forced his boss (Obama) to step in and overrule him (recoup the bonuses)
Geithner arranged the AIG bailout that has since ballooned to $170 billion
Geithner participated in the decision to hide the AIG counterparty bailouts
Geithner still has no coherent plan to fix the banking crisis
Geithner still thinks the problem is "liquidity," not solvency
Geithner has persuaded no one that he's the right man for the job
In a normal environment, the country might have time to wait for Tim Geithner to recover from his early missteps. In the current crisis, however, we don't.

We expect to begin hearing calls for his resignation momentarily.

Retail sector is gaining relative strength

One clear trend visible currently is the steady improvement in retail and restaurants sector relative strength. Post earnings retailers are breaking out.Number of retail stocks had big volume breakouts in last one month and most have followed through on those breakouts. That suggests worst might be over for retail sector and the consumer is not as bankrupt as previously thought.

The bullish and bearish case

  • The oversold level was not sustainable so we got a bounce. Considering the extent of the damage it was not such a big bounce. Last time it was 11% bounce.
  •  But eager participants had the market pushing higher second day and which resulted in a gap up. Obviously those with overnight profitable positions lost no opportunity to take profit.
  • The market spent rest of the day churning and a final wave of buying could not repair much of the damage done in the morning.
  • It is rare that a market follows a popular course of action. A market rally arrives when everyone is calling for one. That should make you a bit skeptical.
  • The bullish case is based on bank CEO statement, extreme oversold levels, extreme sentiments, hope the stimulus will work, the mortgage plan will work and even the perma bears are becoming bullish. The other bullish case is that everyone is skeptical of the rally so it will persist.
  • But there is a bearish case also for why this is mere reflex bounce.
  • Beaten down sectors are leading, which never is the case at start of bull market. Financials are not going to lead next bull market, let us be very clear about it.
  • Oil is not participating.
  • Many big stocks like MCD, WMT, XOM, GE, V, MA and so on could not hold on to their gains.

Wednesday, March 11, 2009

Reflex bounce

  • That was classic bear market reflex bounce. In this market such bounces have not had much legs so far.
  • For days we have seen never ending decline. Slow, persistent, water torture, With no counter trend bounce. After wearing us out for weeks there was the real bounce.
  • Is it a start of a bear market rally or just a one day wonder, we will know.
  • There is some hope that the bears will be on sideline for sometime patiently waiting to put their shorts back. But best course of action is to take it one day at a time.

A little bounce in financials

  • Selling is relentless. Any intraday bounce also gets sold immediately. But today the volume was a bit lighter.
  • There is no panic. It is only relentless selling.
  • A snap back bounce will happen when investors run out of stocks to sell.
  • As the move progresses stocks which were holding up well are slowly wilting e.g. AMZN, PCLN, IBM, gold stocks.
  • But the banks were up today. BAC, WFC, USB, PNC, AXP all managed to end up. Some other large stocks were also up.
  •  Financials are the sector to watch for start of any snap back rally.
  • We will see if they hold on to their gains tomorrow.
  • As of now pre market futures show a up day so we will see.
  • Sectors holding up well currently are:
    • MG113,Agricultural Chemicals
      MG132,Copper
      MG352,Tobacco Products - Other

      MG744,Music & Video Stores

The trend continues

  • We continue to be in a down move and there have been days without counter trend bounce. The oversold market is so weak that it can not put together a tradable rally. The selling is slow and not panicky. Last week  for a day it looked like some panic is setting in but the reversal on Friday in final hours ensured that there will be not much panic.
  • The Market Monitor primary indicator (25% plus in a quarter) is currently at 540. For it to reach 200 it might take more than next week. So going long is a risky proposition as of now.
  • The sectors currently holding up well are:
    • MG113,Agricultural Chemicals
      MG132,Copper
      MG352,Tobacco Products - Other

China can not save the markets

  • A weak bounce yesterday was aggressively sold today. The rumor of Chinese stimulus package was just a rumor. It was a 1000 plus day on Market Monitor, indicating extreme selling pressure.
  • Only sector which might be buy is gold as those stocks are best bought on pullback.
  • Unless the banking sector bounces back, chances of a bounce sticking are low.

    A weak reflex bounce

    • Considering how deeply oversold we are, the rally which we saw yesterday was not at all impressive. Typical reflex bounces end at other end of range. That is a very weak and tepid bounce.
    • The 800 pound gorilla in the market currently is the banking sector. They were making new lows yesterday. Compare that to  November reflex rally, you had them reversing and heading higher. That makes the action of yesterday very suspect.
    • Top sectors are:
      • MG113,Agricultural Chemicals
        MG132,Copper
        MG717,General Entertainment

    Oversold

    • The market is way oversold but it continues to get weaker. It was a 500 plus day to the downside on Market Monitor, that indicates very high selling pressure. This is 5th day of 500 plus selling after a brief one day upside last week.
    • The futures are indicating bullish open like yesterday. The overnight markets were up on speculation about new Chinese stimulus package.
    • Given the fact that we are down for so many days a reflex bounce is logical move but we have seen that this market is so weak that even a tradable bounce has been difficult proposition. . Sentiment, bad news, despair, and price levels all point to one for sometime.
    • The sectors leading to the upside currently are:
      • MG113,Agricultural Chemicals
      • MG132,Copper
      • MG352,Tobacco Products - Other
      • MG528,Medical Practitioners
      • MG725,Broadcasting-Radio
      • MG738,Auto Parts Stores
      • MG741,Sporting Goods Stores
      • MG747,Apparel Stores
      • MG834,Semiconductor-Integrated Cir
      • MG850,-Internet-
      • MG852,Internet Information Providers
    • The sectors leading to the downside currently are:
      • MG313,Housewares & Accessories
      • MG328,Office Supplies
      • MG425,Credit Services
      • MG431,Life Insurance
      • MG444,Reit-Hotel/Motel
      • MG447,Reit-Retail
      • MG523,Health Care Plans
      • MG629,Textile Manufacturing
      • MG637,General Contractors
      • MG712,Resorts & Casinos
      • MG771,Major Airlines
    • Very few stocks are trading closer to the top of their one year range. A scan I ran on stocks within top of their 52 week high range and with sufficient average daily volume has only 21 stocks in it. They are:
      • AIPC
      • AZO
      • CECO
      • COCO
      • CVTX
      • CYCL
      • DLTR

      • PCG
      • PSD

      • TNDM
      • VR
    • Some interesting possibilities on long side out of these are : NFLX, TNDM , AIPC, MYGN.

    • With 10 to 11 days of active selling, there are very few low risk shorts and a possibility of reflex rally makes it difficult to short here. But some of the shorts showing up on my short scans are :
      1. ARCC
      2. BKUNA
      3. CMS
      4. CNL

    Weak market

    • When market does not behave as expected, it indicates the market is very weak. Coming in to last week almost all mean reversion kind of models were indicating a possibility of a bounce. Even the worst moves in bear market are punctuated by counter trend rallies. However this market has failed to put together a bounce. Instead we are getting continuous selling.
    • As selling persists  the breadth is deteriorating slowly. That is the only divergence in this move so far.
    • Sectors and stocks which were providing some leadership to the market on bullish side have also broken down last week. The health care stocks were considered safe heaven but after the Obama budget plan, they have taken a big tumble. Biotech stocks have also shown number of break downs. The education stocks have also stumbled.
    • Only 10 sectors were up a small percent in this month. The top 10 sectors by monthly price change currently are:
      • MG113,Agricultural Chemicals
      • MG137,Nonmetallic Mineral Mining
      • MG513,Drugs-Generic
      • MG528,Medical Practitioners
