• A classic volatile bear market action. In the morning market rallied till lunch hour, making those who shorted aggressively think twice and then it went downhill post lunch.

• In normal market circumstances the market will rarely have 300 plus day, while in past few months this is regular occurrence.
• While the volatility continues cash is best option for long term traders.

Good action

• After a near vertical rise for 8 days or so, the market got whacked yesterday.
• This is good action, as near vertical moves were anyway not sustainable and more time market spends in range or in negative territory better it is for the longevity of next phase rally.
• Market currently is volatile and news and data driven. Good market for day traders.
• Not much action for longer term traders.
• Waiting patiently for the market to set up is key.
• When markets start rallying from bear market bottom, it is the easiest money you can make as stocks after stocks make big moves.

Low volume pullback

• After 8 days of rally , Monday was low volume pullback.
• The market seems to be setting a range here.
• The fast selling phase is over and a side way move here might be developing till next earnings season.
• The sector theme continues to point to recovery with transport and interest rate sensitive sectors dominating the scene.
• Chinese stocks are again finding a bid after a nasty sell off earlier.
• Familiar theme of Energy and oil related stocks is also reasserting itself.
• Technology stocks dominate the downside.

The reflex bounce continues

• The market has had a 8 days of rally and out of that 6 days were 300 plus days.

• This has resulted in the spread between the 65 days has narrowed considerably.
• In last 2 days some stocks at or near 52 week high are beginning to breakout.
• Till now overwhelmingly the stocks breaking out were oversold and heavily shorted stocks.
• The lack of participation by good quality stocks in this rally is one negative.
• Another negative is almost all the major leaders and leading sectors have put in top and showing signs of distribution.

Sector Trends

The top 5 sectors in terms of month growth are all dominated by interest rate sensitive groups.

None of these groups have the earnings power to make big moves. When homebuilders were rallying in bear market, they had earnings power, almost all of them had high double digit or triple digit earnings growth or sales growth. Only Homebuilder with outstanding earnings currently is the Brazilian builder Gafisa (GFA). It is forming a nice base near its 52 week high. It is also a recent IPO. This is a stock to watch for possible entry on EP or high volume breakout.

If you look at the top 6 groups with largest number of stocks making new high, none of the groups from above list barring Savings and Loan is in the top 6 group in last one month. Savings and loan has made it to top 6 today. Out of the other groups dominating the list Medical group has the potential but most stocks in the group are not following through on breakout. Only exception so far has been Somanetics SMTS. It is a stock worth keeping an eye on.
